Going Around and Through

Going Around and Through

As I finished my walk for the morning, I stopped by the pier to take a look at the water and the view. From the park, as I looked across the water I could just barely see my house. More specifically, I could make out my bedroom window. This window provides natural light to the room where I wake up each morning and where I return for refuge, rest and safety each night.

From where I was standing our house seemed like a straight shot across the water, just a short trip. But, because I don’t own a boat, if I wanted to reach the comfort of home, I had to go around and through. There was no straight pathway home. Even though I could see where home was, or at least the vicinity, there was a necessary journey ahead. While the straight path was preferred, the journey around and through was the only option if I wanted to get there. The 1.75 mile walk while scenic includes some open spaces, hills, narrow pathways, joggers, hills, cyclists, hidden driveways, mean geese, hills and various critters. Did I mention hills?

One comfort while going around and through is that I have at least gotten a glimps of where I am going. I know why I want to go there. I am off the preferred path to get there, but not off purpose. I want to get home. Sometimes the pathway to our goals is not a straight line. And our trek off the preferred path while necessary may include distractions, difficulties and unexpected encounters. But, we must stay pointed in the direction of our goals and remember the purpose of the journey is to get home (or accomplish the desired end result).

The best part of my outdoor walks is reaching the point that I know I am close to home. But, the last quarter mile is uphill! The same may be true about making things happen in your life. Just as you get close to seeing things manifest, life gets a little tougher. Don’t get discouraged you’ve made the trip “around”, this is the opportunity to make it “through”. And you can do it. Stay focused on your “why” and the impeding joy that comes with not fainting and not quitting. It will be well worth it.
